Selected Works

Nitza was a prolific artist who took inspiration from everyday objects, her family, and travels abroad. She attended art classes throughout her life and experimented with different styles and mediums. Click each image below to explore selections from her oeuvre.

FAMILY

From her childhood in Greece until the end of her life, Nitza captured everyday scenes of her family. Her renditions were more than renditions, they held symbolic references.

FIGURES

Nitza was introduced to figure studies while at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and she drew and painted the human form throughout her life. She often commented that the study of anatomy was necessary to authentically render a portrait or figure painting.

PORTRAITS

Nitza’s subjects often included her siblings and their children, and she captured their personalities and interests with her pencil or paint brush. Many of these portraits were requested and prized by her family.

STILL LIFES

Nitza’s lifelong fascination with light is most apparent in her still lifes, where she explored the way that light shines on glass, cloth, and other textured surfaces. These works are some of her most geometric and experimental pieces.

PLACES

Many of Nitza’s later works include playful and picturesque scenes from vacations on Lake Michigan, as well as more subdued renderings of streetscapes and other landmarks.
